Immoderate Makings

Pomegranate Moscow Mule

I’m big on holiday cocktails, but they can’t all be hot toddies. I love Moscow mules in the summer, and this pomegranate mule is just as refreshing for the winter months. Just a small amount of pure pomegranate juice adds a deep, rich red color to the drink and a pop of fruity flavor. You can also use cranberry juice, but be sure to use unsweetened juice.

Mules are easy to make, and unlike martinis, you can eyeball the portions without messing anything up too terribly. Moscow mules are traditionally served in copper mugs, but be sure to use lined mugs to limit your exposure to the copper, which is no bueno.

Copper mugs lend themselves beautifully to garnishes. I love snipping a couple sprigs of rosemary from the bush outside for a festive flourish. If you have the patience to seed a pomegranate, sprinkle a few of the arils on top to really make it special.

This drink is great for a holiday party, and as easy as it is, it still takes time to make. To guard against getting stuck in the kitchen playing bartender while your guests are enjoying themselves, set up a DIY drink station. I stock mine with booze, mixers, a cocktail shaker, glassware and recipe cards. This allows guests to mix their own drinks, and frees you up to actually enjoy the party. Cheers!
